CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
1993 – Balboa Plants The Seed
“We have people here who are like street banks,” Mano said. “If you know you’re gonna need a bunch of change and only have large bills, you can go to a street changer.”
My mind quickly spun out to other reasons people would need to convert large sums of money into a different form of currency, without creating a paper trail.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
1993 – A Man, A Plan
“Rafael,” I said, “I understand that product is product, but nothing lasts forever. I'm always open to changing lanes if lanes must be changed.”
“I'll keep that in mind,” Bolo replied.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
1993 – New Hopeton Bank
“I found you a business opportunity,” Prentiss told me.
“Oh yeah?” I asked. “Something big? Real?”
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
1993 – Lloydie (& His Sister)
“Lloydie and his sister will be here soon,” Prentiss said. “Did you bring the check?”
“Of course,” I said.
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
1994 – No Retreat No Surrender
“When are you going back down to Panama City?” Téo asked.
I looked up from the drink I’d been pouring and said I had a ticket for July.
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
1995 – The Kids
“I’m going to have Mundo come into the New York side of the business,” Bolo told me. “Next year, after he graduates.”
I tried to keep my face still. This sounded like Bolo was making a joke. Why would he want Mundo involved in that type of work?
CHAPTER THIRTY
1995 – Restoration
Lloydie looked grim.
“They caught up to me,” he said. “I’m getting deported.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
1995 – Lincoln Road Between Bedford & Flatbush
It was the path from my arrival to my elevation.
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
1996 – Brownsville
“I need a bigger space that I can renovate,” Osvald replied. “I gotta modernize, Hopeton! Pero soy un tipo común.”
He crooned that last part along with the Tito Nieves song that happened to be playing at that moment.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
1996 – Brass Tacks
“I can’t believe you landed a house over here,” Téo called out to me, as he pulled in behind my truck. “I used to date a girl who lived over on Rutland, but then Lali turned up pregnant.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
1996 – Staffing Plan
Ever-Sure Security Solutions had its office on the second floor of a building located in Restoration Plaza, over in Bedford Stuyvesant.
