CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
1996 – Pitkin Ave.
“The fuck, Hopeton?” Osvald started in, once everyone had left the shop. “I ask you for a loan and then you go ghost on me?”
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
1996 – The Kids Part II
“Where’s Mundo?” I asked, right off the bat.
Téo, knowing what I was really asking, chose to deflect. “I sent Mundo to Europe for a little post-graduation trip. Pierre’s keeping him company there.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
1974 – Flashback to Port of Kingston
I had been shunted into an institutional system that felt like a free-for-all.
CHAPTER FORTY
1996 – Landlord Tenant
“All I want to do is find something I can stay in until I’m ready to retire,” Osvald replied.
“Retire,” I reflected. “I’d love to be able to think like that. You’re luckier than you even realize, my friend.”
CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
1996 – November Deadline
A funny thing happened when I returned to my monk’s cell that evening.
Everything looked old. And tired.
CHAPTER FORTY-TWO
1996 - The Heir
“Okay, so what’ve we got going on here?” Mundo asked, looking around the small space.
I tried to recall if Olmando had ever actually been inside Panamanian Star before, and couldn’t remember anything.
CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
1996 - The Spare
On the Friday morning of his third week of employment, Mundo showed up at nine o’clock on the dot, Pierre in tow.
CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR
1997 - Pulled In
“Good morning,” I said to the two kids on my doorstep. “You brought your assistant, Mundo?”
“Ha ha, Hopeton,” Mundo replied. “Cabrón needs a job. You gotta have something for him to do. Right?”
CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE
1980 – Flashback To The Paperwork
When the scheme blew up, I took the fall and spent two years inside Kingston Penitentiary.
CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
1997 – International Relations
I dialed Téo’s home number and got him on the second ring.
“I need you to meet me and Bolo at PanStar next Sunday at one thirty,” I told him.
CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN
1997 – Follow Car
“Alright, Hopeton,” Pierre replied, “what are you getting at here?”
“Nothing at all,” I said. “I’m just making conversation.”
CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
1997 – PanStar Summit
“Well, I’m assuming this isn’t a social event,” Téo said.
“More like a summit,” I replied.
