CHAPTER FIFTY
1997 – Life’s Work
I shook hands with my contact, a union steward named Jeffery, and handed him a leather portfolio full of hundred-dollar bills.
“Jeffery, I want to introduce you to Pierre,” I said, pushing Pierre towards my contact. “He’s going to be taking over a lot of my day runs.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE
1998 – Speculators
“Boss man!” I called out when I saw Prentiss.
“I have an investment opportunity I think you and I should jump on,” I said. “And it’s coming via Lloydie’s sister.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
1998 – Home Part II
That night, lying atop of my new king-sized bed, I allowed myself to return to the one thing that was still bothering me- no one was watching out for PanStar.
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
1998 – Borders
Pierre flopped down on the couch and changed the television to a French language cooking show.
Mushroom crepes with cream sauce.
CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR
1998 – HQ
The following week, Mundo turned up on payday, some random youngster in tow.
“Hello, young man,” I said to the friend. “Is this your new employee?” I asked Olmando.
CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
1998 – New Era Kids
Eventually Mundo became fixated on something that took his focus away from petty power plays.
Olmando wanted his own empire.
CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX
1998 – Petition
“We need money,” Mundo said. “We want you to go to Bolo and get him to give us enough to get up and running.”
I laughed. “What, like a dot com business?”
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
1998 – Street Dreams
“I heard there’s a new crew wholesaling out in Far Rock,” the nephew continued. “Supposedly, they’re a splinter group of one of your partner’s old crews.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT
1998 – Moves
My immigration lawyer had let me know that my sister’s visa interview date would soon be confirmed- she was in the next batch of applicants.
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE
1998 – Alternative Sources
I was doing my best to keep my focus on PanStar business but found that tending to the little parking lot enterprise I’d started with Prentiss and socializing with my weekend cricket league teammates were far more satisfying pursuits.
CHAPTER SIXTY
1998 – HQ Part II
Mundo immediately started asking me about when I was going to “shake loose Bolo’s fundage,” but I stopped him dead in his tracks.
“Before you kids can get your clubhouse going, there’s something else that has to take priority,” I said.
CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE
1998 – The Other Side Of Atlantic
Pierre looked up, switched the tv off and stood up.
“Alright, I found the space,” he told me.
