CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE

2009 - Terms & Conditions

Contract negotiations with Mr. Henriques went well- nothing very exciting to report on it, other than it proceeded amicably, with minimal back and forth.  I found a labor lawyer who specialized in consulting contracts between U.S. professionals and Central American construction firms- he told me my agreement was one of the cleanest he’d ever seen.  “Beyond fair,” is how he put it.

We agreed that I would be in Panama by the second week of September.  That gave me enough time to pack up whatever I wanted to ship to Panama and figure out what to do with the rest of it.  Mr. Henriques insisted on putting me on the payroll starting July first.

“I have a feeling Olmando is about to start asking you to handle some business obligations he has in New York,” he said.

“Do you have any idea what I should expect?” I asked.

“I think it shouldn’t be much more than entertaining clients who are in town here.  Nothing more than that,” he replied.  “But, because it will take up some of your time, let’s make sure you’re covered.”

I instantly flashed on how Mundo added that ambiguous Miami drinks hang with his loosely associated collection of business buddies to our official Boys’ Weekend itinerary.  Mr. Henriques’s equally vague heads up was most definitely connected.

I started to wonder if Édo had been sent to the Montana to vet me further.

But did Mundo really have the time or foresight to get that deep[1]

[1] Édo was not sent by Mundo. He simply wanted to make sure Pierre had a good time and made some useful connections while in Haiti.
