CHAPTER SIXTY

2009 - Capicú Part II

Daniele’s room turned out to be a two-bedroom bay view suite on an upper floor.

He went into super host mode as soon as we all got through the door.

“The fridge is stocked with drinks.  Grab whatever you want,” he told us, as he picked up the phone to call room service.

Édo excused himself and went to find a bathroom.

I saw a dominoes set sitting on a bookshelf, so I brought them over to the eight-seater dining table, then walked into the kitchen to grab a beer.

Mundo, Filo and Skip had immediately headed to the balcony off the living room.  The view was spectacular, even at night.  Filo sparked up a joint, took a hit and passed it around.  I waved it off when it got to me.

“You sure you don’t want any, Brón?”  Mundo asked.

“Doe, man,” I replied.  “You’ve known me for over twenty years.  When have you ever seen me smoke weed?”

“There’s always a first time,” Filo joked.

Room service had already been delivered by the time we stepped back into the suite.

Daniele threw ESPN on the five-thousand-inch plasma tv and we got into our game.

It was two am by the time Doe and I left, and I was $750 richer.

“I’ll pay the fare home,” I said.

Doe was asleep before I’d even gotten in the cab.
