CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

2000- Ring Ring

We got back to Bed Stuy sometime before 5am.  What a crazy night.

Cabrón dropped me off at Halsey and as I was getting out of the car, I told him he could stay over if he wanted to.  I don’t think I meant it as a sexual come-on, but perhaps I did.

But again, Cabrón didn’t bite.

“Nah, I’m good,” was all he said.  I gave him a tight smile, closed the door and opened my gate.

Once inside my apartment, I did a teensy, weensy line of the good PanStar dope, crawled into bed and crashed.  On top of the covers.  In my street clothes.

Sweet dreams are made of this.

I woke up to the tinny sound of a burner phone ringing.  It was the old-fashioned Motorola Mundo had given me before he’d left.  I was only supposed to receive calls on it.  This was the first time it had rang since Boxing Day when Doe called it to tell me he was at the airport and his flight was about to take off.  A few days afterwards I’d tried to call his cell number and it had been disconnected.  Oh well.

I ran to get the phone and picked it up on the fourth ring.

“Hello?  Mundo?” I asked, all out of breath, sleep still fogging my brain.

I heard a laugh on the other end.  “Yo.”  It was Cabrón.

This motherfucker.  Calling on the phone Mundo gave me.  Now what?

“Yes?” I said.  “How can I help you?”

“Just checking to make sure you’re good.  I’mma come by your crib in a few days to talk to you about something.” he replied.

“Okay?” The question mark behind the word hung in the air.

“A’ight.  See you then.”

He hung up.

I looked at the clock.  It was 3:30pm.  I decided to get myself together and head over to HQ.  Maybe Biz could clue me in on what my actual role was going to be in this crazy organization.  Junkies like me thrived in chaos but secretly we all craved consistency.
